Creative exercise – Let´s crop!

Published April 7, 2017, by Stina Axelson

To get your creativity going we have put together a few improvising exercises. Discovering new techniques, tools and materials will lead to new ideas and creativity will occur when you go against your own expectations and out of your comfort zone.

If you prefer using a pencil and have a tendency to erase your lines until perfection, use a sharpie instead. If you get caught in details, use a timer. Try not to be precious about your work, instead go with the flow.

It´s time to crop, cut and paste! For this exercise we will create something new out of something old. The idea is to explore new compositions and designs based on an original image.

1. Choose an image to work with.

It can be a magazine cut out or an original piece you have created.

2. Use a cropping tool to find new compositions from an original piece.

You can do this by photocopying, scanning or photographing the image you have chosen. For this exercise I enlarged a sketch using a photocopier. Since I´m a lover of colour, I had to add some watercolour to make it a bit more, well colourful.

3.Enlarge a small portion of the original piece and create a new piece based on the enlarged composition by cutting, weaving, tearing.

4. Place the pieces and glue them down. You have now created a new original piece!

If you’d like to share what you make, just put it up on Instagram hashtag it #thecraftlabstockholm

See you out there!
