Make a keepsake from an old treasured garment or a family heirloom. Create a beautiful personal necklace in a just a few minutes without any fancy tools.
I´ve kept boxes upon boxes with my angel grandmothers old linen, embroidery and crochet. Due to having hardly any space to store it all, I´ve had to get rid of most of it, but a few pieces are still with me.
Unfortunately I never met my grandmother, but I´ve been told that she would spend hours with her crafts. It´s such a shame not to use any of her creations, but I just haven’t found any use of them. Some of you might think cutting into them is a sacrilege, and I agree, but it is even sadder to have them packed down in boxes. I´ve been following the artist Mira Bodiroza on instagram for a while, and she posted her beautiful button necklace so I got inspired to try it out for myself.
I used a metal cover button with a metal back closing, as I wanted the nice finish on the reverse side. I guess you could do this on any round object, or any shape at all for that matter.
I have to admit, it was a bit fiddly with the embroidered cushion and the threads coming loose. I had to test out a few pieces before it worked.
The embroidery fabric was quite thick and it was impossible to press together. You are supposedly only meaning to press it together with a bobbin, but that didn’t work for me, I had to use the only thing I had at hand, a mortar. In the end I almost ruined the closing trying to hammer it together, and I turned to superglue as my saviour. Ah I love glue. It really saves the day. What I really enjoyed about making the buttons:
Now I can always carry around a little piece of my grandma and I really like the result.
What do you think? By the way, you can find the metal cover buttons here
